iTandCoffee Joins the Be Connected Network
There’s never been a better time to be online. Be Connected is an Australian Government initiative aimed at increasing the confidence, skills and online safety of older Australians when they use the internet and everyday technology. Older Australians with low internet skills can often feel isolated from their community and family at a time in their lives when feeling connected is increasingly important. Be Connected aims to change that through a family and community centred approach; it will help older Australians to realise the value of being connected online and provide access to appropriate training and support in a safe and familiar environment. Launched in early October 2017, the Be Connected initiative delivers a range of resources specifically designed to support these Australians via:

10/1/2018 0 Comments It's also time to install the the next Mac update to plug that Spectre security holeYou may have already seen yesterday's post about Apple releasing an update for iOS for iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches. (Here is the article if you missed it: Time for yet another iOS update to protect your iPad and iPhone).
But that's not the only update that was released yesterday. Apple has also released updates for MacOS and for Safari - to plug the same Spectre security threat.
Here we go again! 2018 has only just started, and the press is flooded with stories of the latest security threats to our devices, called Spectre and Meltdown.
Spectre and Meltdown are security flaws in computer chips in over 3 billion devices - computers, tablets, smartphones. Meltdown only impacts Intel chips, but Spectre impacts billions of devices. All hardware and software vendors - including Apple - have been scrambling to release patches that will 'plug' this security hole. Continuing the Back-to-School theme of recent articles ...
If you, like me, are going to very soon be filling out the student public transport concession application, you may well be thinking about getting new ID photos for each child needing this travel concession. These days, instead of paying a small fortune for ID photos printed by the post office, chemist or camera shop, I use an app on my iPhone and to take the photos, and print them on our home printer. This year, I have found that my previously trusty ID Photo app is no longer available after the upgrade to iOS 11 - so have had to go in search of a new one for this year's photos. The app that I have landed on is Biometric Passport Photo - to check it out, just tap/click on the link. It is free if you just want to print single photos. Does anyone have a different Photo ID app that they prefer? We at iTandCoffee are very excited to have been asked to present to the Boroondara Business Network on Tuesday Feb 20th at 6pm, on the topic of how to make sure you get the most from your personal technology - and ensure that all your data and photos are protected and available to you when you need them.
This session is open to anyone in small business in the Boroondara area - bookings can be made here on TryBooking. Cost is $15 per person - and Boroondara council always puts on a lovely spread of food and drink! PS. No, that's not me in the photo! I wish I was that young! Our last 2017 Free Friday for iTandCoffee Club members was held on Friday December 15th - a special one with Christmas treats and a glass of bubbles for those who attended!
Here is the great set of topics that we covered. (All topics discussed at this club session related to the iPad and iPhone.)
This week we have a bit of a 'shortcuts' theme in our blog articles. In another article, we looked at a great 'keyboard shortcut' for Mac. Let's look here at a great shortcut that saves time - and typing - on the iPad and iPhone.
There are some phrases - words, sentences, ID codes, email addresses - that we need to type over and over - sometimes more than once each day.
Wouldn't it be easier to just type two or three letters, and have the longer phrase automatically appear, saving you all that typing effort? When I travelled overseas, I lost count of how many times I had to enter my email address, my Qantas Cash account number, passport number and overseas mobile phone number. More recently, I have to frequently provide bank account details, and can never remember the account number and BSB. And we also find ourselves entering our email address and mobile phone number over and over. I do have my Qantas Cash and bank account details stored away in password safe on my iPhone, but it is tedious and takes time to look them up each time. No longer do I have to look up these details. I simply type a few letters, and the numbers/details magically appear. 9/12/2017 0 Comments Another Mac tip - a great shortcut that allows you to easily hide and show the dockI was just taking a screen shot on my Mac for use in an article, and found that I need a bit of extra 'real estate' for the area of screen I was wanting to screen shot.
I really needed the dock to disappear just briefly, so I could use that area of the screen. The choice of whether to 'hide' the dock when it is not in use is a System Preference, controlled by the Dock option Automatically Hide and Show the Dock. This week iTandCoffee received a call from a client who needed assistance with scanning her Mac for any viruses or adware/malware after she clicked the link in the email she received below. It did look quite real and, when she found that she could not quite read the content of the image shown, she chose the View photos taken by the bylaw officer link to find out more about her parking ticket. For more details about this scam email, read this recent Herald Sun article: Don’t pay this fake parking fine Related articles
